Dingy grout can certainly detract from the appearance of your tile. It can also leave your bathroom, kitchen, or any other tiled location looking less clean than it really is. Drab and dingy grout is a commonplace occurrence that happens to nearly anyone who actually 'lives' in their living space. Grout is sponge-like and will absorb moisture, mildew, dirt, and grime. Over time, as these materials collect on the grout's porous surface, they'll leave the grout looking unsightly. Fortunately, there are some remedies to clean and brighten your grout before calling in the professionals.
According to Martha Stewart, "water and patience will be your two best tools" for cleaning dingy grout. She suggests spraying hot water directly on the grout and using a stiff bristle brush to lift the dirt from the grout's surface. After spraying the dirt away, take a rag to blot the surface. This is an effective way to clean grout on a routine basis; however, if your grout is particularly dingy, you may need to try alternative remedies.
If your grout is dirty and discolored, make a paste with two parts baking soda to one part white vinegar. If you're concerned about the fragility of your tile, Better Homes and Gardens recommends substituting the vinegar with hydrogen peroxide. Apply the mixture to a small inconspicuous area of the grout and rub to ensure that it doesn't discolor your tile. You can use an old toothbrush to apply the paste all along the grout. Allow the paste to sit undisturbed on your grout for a few minutes and then rinse it with clean water.
